Does religion really thrive on ignorance and fear, as many atheists claim?

Answer by Jim Ashby:

Biblical sin makes us guilty for being born. It pits us against ourselves by claiming our very nature is sinful. We're all miserable wretches who can only be 'saved' by love of Jesus.

How is it that people are oblivious to this heads-I-win, tails-you-lose, pretzel logic? Fear and guilt, of couse! The only way to keep you ignorant of the human condition is to impugn, deny and pervert your humanity.

But why would anybody want to do that?

Well, as shamans learned what buttons to push, their secret knowledge carried over to formal religion. As their brainwashing became more sophisticated, their personal security became more assured.

Politically, leaders found that superstitious conformity to religion was very useful. What better way to control the masses? The cabal of state and church was a natural marriage. The purpose of religion is to support clergy and that purpose is aided by making us more compliant to state control. The marriage of church and state is great for rulers but not so great for the ruled.

Democracy is the cure to religion. Freedom versus control.

The struggle for power is the stuff of history.

Does religion really thrive on ignorance and fear, as many atheists claim?
